Tunku Abdul Rahman Marina Park is a state park located in Gaya Bay, 3 kilometres offshore from Kota Kinabalu. Named after Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, it was gazetted in 1974 as Sabah's second national park. The park covers an area of 50 sq kilometres comprising 5 island knows as Sapi, Manukan, Mamutik, Sulug and Gaya, their surrounding reefs, and sea. Its main objective is to protect their fauna, flora, and marine eco-systems. Geogically, the islands are part of the Crocker Rane but became isolated from the massif when sea levels rose after the last ice age.
As the islands are only a short ride away from Kota Kinabalu it is popular destination among day-trippers and it can be quite crowded during weekends. These islands offer a few water activities for all ages such as snorkelling, and sea-walking, or more extreme water sports such as banana boat, flying fish, para sailing, jet ski and diving. There are a few resorts within the marine park, so people can also sty there for a few days. Yearly, there are about 300,000 tourist visit the marine park.
